A new exhibit at the North Bay Museum called "North Bay at 100: A People's History" is now open as part of centennial celebrations.
The effort began with a call-out to the North Bay community.
"We used social media, word of mouth, and local media to encourage the community to 'send us your stories' to help us celebrate North Bay’s Centennial," said North Bay Museum Director, Naomi Hehn. "The result is a wide variety of displays that reflect the events, industries, institutions, people, and places that impacted the lives of ordinary North Bay residents."
There’s a new butcher shop in town that stresses that it’s northern owned and operated and its products are raised in Northern Ontario.
Penokean Hills Meats hosted its grand opening on Saturday at 1120 O’Brien Street. Ironically it was the former home of the Costakos family butcher shop, which served North Bay going back to the 1950s.

“Our long-term vision is to have four of five retail stores across Northeast Ontario. We initially did a study in Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, North Bay and Muskoka. We quickly identified that North Bay was a place that didn’t have a bona fide butcher shop. There are people that sell meat but not a full-fledged butcher shop,” says Tulloch.

The money comes from the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant, which provides funding for local emergency management training, equipment purchases, and infrastructure improvements.
“Our government is proud to support Bonfield and Chisholm townships, so they’re equipped to respond effectively when crisis occurs,” says Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP. “These investments build on government support to protect Ontario, ensuring we remain resilient and prepared”.
Ontario’s northeast and northwest regions saw several new wildfires last Saturday, with crews responding to multiple blazes as fire hazards remain elevated. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) reported two new fires in the northeast and three in the northwest by the evening of May 10, while a larger fire near Wabaseemoong continues to challenge suppression efforts.
Two new wildland fires were confirmed by the MNR on Saturday, according to their daily forest fire update bulletin.
North Bay 2, a 0.1-hectare fire, was reported west of Little Lakes Road and north of Highway 17 – approximately one kilometre west of the area’s hospital. One fire ranger crew, alongside local firefighters, responded with aerial support from two Twin Otter waterbombers and a lead birddog aircraft.
The fire was listed as under control by Sunday morning – however, water bombers remain on standby at Jack Garland Airport should the situation re-escalate.
A second fire, Haliburton 2, also measuring 0.1 hectares, was discovered two kilometres west of Morrison’s Landing, south of the Severn River. One FireRanger crew was deployed, and the fire was later reported under control as of Sunday.
The fire hazard in the northeast region remains moderate to high according to Saturday’s update.
