Council votes to reduce 2026 levy using reserves

North Bay Council has voted to lower the City’s proposed tax levy increase for 2026 by drawing more money from reserve funds.

Following last night’s continued budget discussions, councillors approved a 3.95 per cent tax levy increase, down from the 4.45 per cent option Staff were recommending earlier in the meeting.

Canadore lab program eligible for stay and learn grant

The province has announced it involves students in the medical lab technology program at Canadore College and the medical lab science program at Confederation College, in Thunder Bay.

Jury convicts North Bay man of second-degree murder in 2022 stabbing death

Brandon Nakogee has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Tristan Ayers, a North Bay man who was killed just eight days before Christmas in 2022​.

The 12-person jury found Nakogee guilty Thursday night after a little more than two-week trial.

Family members of the victim gasped when the seven men and five women on the jury read the verdict shortly after 8 p.m., after deliberating for five and a half hours.

Budget proposes $3 million from casino money for new homeless shelter

City council is considering the possibility of using $3 million of the city’s revenues from the Cascades Casino to fight North Bay’s growing homelessness problem
