West Nipissing to discuss controversial glyphosate aerial spraying

On or about August 20, large swaths of the Nipissing Forest will be sprayed from the sky with glyphosate-based herbicides. ‘Supporters of Stop the Spray Canada’ want these sprays to stop, and plan to continue protesting the government’s practice. West Nipissing councillor, Jamie Restoule, also wants the province to reconsider the spray, and has tabled a motion to that effect.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources explained in a recent release, “Selected stands of the Nipissing Forest will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation.” The Northshore Forest around Elliot Lake and Espanola, the Romeo Malette Forest south of Timmins, the Timiskaming Forest, and the Ottawa Valley Forest are all slated to be sprayed this summer.

Restoule’s motion will be discussed at council’s regular meeting on August 12...

Council questions North Bay’s investment strategy as CFO departs

North Bay’s Chief Financial Officer presented what may be her final financial report, as councillors raised questions about how the City handles and reports its investments.

Margaret Karpenko, who leaves for a new role in Sudbury on September 2, delivered the 2024 investment report during a Special Committee Meeting last night. It outlines how public funds were invested over the past year and how much income was earned.

North Bay R.I.D.E. check locates stolen vehicle

A routine traffic stop by the North Bay police led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of a local man.

On Saturday at about 11:48 p.m., officers conducting a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check identified an unlicensed driver. With no licensed driver available, the vehicle was towed after police were unable to reach the registered owner.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle had been involved in a collision earlier in the day, with the driver allegedly fleeing the scene...

Testing confirms blue-green algae bloom in Callander Bay and Wasi Lake

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says a blue-green algae bloom has been confirmed in Callander Bay and Wasi Lake.

Officials say samples were taken on July 29 by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. The Health Unit says while blue-green algae blooms may not always show the presence of toxins, there is always the risk that toxins could be produced.

“Toxins can stay in the water for up to three weeks after the algae bloom is gone, causing skin irritation, and if swallowed, diarrhea and vomiting,” states a release...
