Canadore's support staff rally before bargaining deadline

Members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) held a lunchtime rally last Wednesday at the south entrance of Canadore’s College Drive Campus to garner support for their ongoing contract negotiations.

If a deal is not reached by midnight, the union will be able to legally strike. There are 10,000 full-time college support workers across all 24 Ontario colleges. Each local branch held a rally.

The contract negotiations are not between the locals and the individual colleges. Negotiations occur between the union’s bargaining committee and the College Employer Council, the government-mandated bargaining agent for all 24 Ontario publicly funded colleges...

$15,400 in drugs seized. Toronto man arrested

A Toronto man was arrested following a North Bay Police Service (NBPS) Street Crime Unit (SCU) investigation into drug trafficking at a Worthington Street residence, resulting in the seizure of methadone, cocaine, crack cocaine, and cash.

On September 10 at 11:34 p.m., officers from the SCU arrested a man they had seen trafficking a controlled substance.

The street value of the drugs seized is approximately $15,400...

Sexual assault charges in North Bay withdrawn against Sudbury murderer

The Crown in North Bay has withdrawn sexual assault and other charges against Robert Steven Wright, who was convicted of murdering a Laurentian University student in Sudbury in the late 1990s.

Wright had been charged in December 2023 with two counts of sexual assault, harassment and forcible confinement in connection with incidents that took place in North Bay in 2015 and 2016. He pleaded not guilty to all four offences in December 2024.

But the North Bay courthouse confirmed to CTV News on Wednesday that those charges were withdrawn Sept. 8.

The jury rejected his defence and found him guilty. Wright was charged with the offences in North Bay after his murder conviction and seemed headed for a trial sometime this fall.

No reason was given for why the charges were suddenly dropped...

First segment of road to Ring of Fire announced

The province says a road rehabilitation project in Geraldton, about halfway between Hearst and Thunder Bay, is the first segment on the road network into the Ring of Fire and its critical minerals.

Nearly $62 million is being invested in the project connecting Highway 11 to Highway 584.

The government says developing all-season, dependable road access is a critical step to unlocking economic opportunities and benefits in the Ring of Fire...
