Lack of investment causing violence at North Bay jail, say correctional officers

Zack Boudreau, Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 616 president, said there’s a lot of space on the grounds at the North Bay Jail to increase capacity.
“And we need it. We need more correctional officers and corporals to manage misconducts,” he said during Monday’s picket demonstration outside the jail on Trout Lake Road.
Boudreau provided a glimpse of the working conditions and changes required to keep staff working at the Trout Lake Road facility. Some of the other outstanding issues include pension, scheduling, workload, overtime, benefits and mental health benefits, and workplace violence...
North Bay group launches winter boot campaign for the homeless

As temperatures drop, a local organization is stepping up to ensure no one is left out in the cold. The Compassionate Committee for the Homeless is launching its Winter Boot Campaign in North Bay.
"We will be collecting essential items and looking for sponsors for winter boots to ensure people experiencing homelessness survive the cold winter months," says a news release.
Drop-offs will be accepted on Saturday, November 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption garages across from 480 McIntyre St. West.
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) has a new president. Dave Plourde, Mayor of Kapuskasing, was elected to the position on Friday.
He succeeds Danny Whalen, who was recognized for his 15 years of service on the board, including the past eight as president.

Northern Ont. shelter-in-place order lifted, manhunt ends with one person in custody: OPP

An emergency alert, issued last Friday evening, for the Latchford and Temagami North area of northern Ontario has been lifted by Ontario Provincial Police. Authorities said in an update posted to social media Sunday afternoon that one person is now in custody.
“Residents are no longer required to shelter in place and may safely resume regular activities,” said OPP, shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday.
“The OPP thanks the public for their patience and cooperation throughout this incident.”
