At just 23 years old, Cameron Welch is running a remote wilderness camp deep in northern Ontario. It’s called Shooting Star Camp, and it sits along the Spanish River in a place secluded from the bustle of city life.

Public meeting to provide update on PFAS cleanup on Nov. 19

North Bay residents will hear first-hand how the $20-million cleanup is going.
The public is invited to an information session on the latest efforts to address the polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) originating from the Jack Garland Airport and Canadian Forces Base North Bay.
The Department of National Defence and the City of North Bay will co-host the session on Nov. 19. Residents will be able to hear the latest project information and updates on their joint efforts to address PFAS.
During the session, subject matter experts will present updates on ongoing studies and remediation efforts and provide a forum for one-on-one interaction with project teams and experts to address community questions and concerns, according to a media release issued by the Department of National Defence.

Sundridge kids prepare for Trunk or Treat Halloween event

Centennial Public School (SCPS) in Sundridge is bringing back Trunk or Treat, a popular community Halloween event.
On Halloween night, the school opens its doors and its parking lot to provide a warm space for trick or treaters to gather. Residents are welcome, too. Community members are invited to load some candy in their trunk and drive it over to the school for the kids to enjoy. That’s where the event gets its name — Trunk or Treat.
The goal is to create a central gathering area on Halloween, as many residents live in rural areas and don’t have many trick-or-treaters stop by. Visitors to the school can warm up, use the restroom, enjoy hot chocolate and trick-or-treat all at one convenient location...
Truck full of U.S. handguns found in northern Ontario, two men charged

An eight-month investigation into cocaine trafficking culminated last month in the seizure of dozens of U.S.-made handguns loaded onto a tractor-trailer in northern Ontario.
Two people from southern Ontario have been charged after police stopped the truck in Temiskaming Shores on Sept. 11 and found 72 handguns inside.
The truck left Toronto before it was stopped in northern Ontario, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Thursday.
“The search warrant led to the seizure of 72 illegal handguns and 66 prohibited devices,” police said...
