Province launches full governance investigation into Near North District School Board

The Minister of Education is “angry and disappointed” with the Near North District School Board and has launched a full governance review.

Paul Calandra issued a letter to parents on Friday informing them of his disappointment with the board and actions that will be implemented immediately to try to rectify this situation.

“I am launching a full governance review of the Near North District School Board. The board’s own trustees recently voted to request an investigation, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. This review will begin immediately, and I have asked for a report back in 30 days,” he stated in the letter.

The issues stem from a “troubling” situation unfolding at the K-12 school in Parry Sound and the Near North District School Board...

Residents voice concerns over Castle Arms motion heading to Council

A motion aimed to “restore democratic and public oversight” of Castle Arms, a non-profit seniors’ housing corporation, is set to go before North Bay Council on Tuesday.

The motion, moved by Councillor Maggie Horsfield and seconded by Councillor Gary Gardiner, follows governance changes made in 2021 that the document attributes to disputed legal advice.

The motion describes how Castle Arms was created in 1986 by the Cassellholme Board of Management to provide affordable housing for seniors. Although incorporated as a separate non-profit, the motion states it was initially governed by the same individuals who oversaw Cassellholme...

Man who hit North Bay police officer with a vehicle won’t fight deportation

A 21-year-old Brampton man pleaded guilty Friday afternoon in a North Bay courtroom for running into a city police officer as he tried to flee a traffic stop.

Sahibjot Singh was originally charged with attempted murder, but that was withdrawn months ago.

Singh pleaded guilty to six charges, including assaulting police, impaired driving, violating a release order and flight from police.

The Crown is seeking a five-year sentence, minus pre-trial custody. The defence is arguing Singh should receive an enhanced credit for the 15 months he has already served – 1 ½ days for each day in jail – and be sentenced to time served...
