Hybrid buses and new sidewalks coming to North Bay with government funding

Public transportation in North Bay is getting a green and modern makeover as part of a multi-government initiative that includes replacing old buses with hybrids and upgrading key facilities.

The combined investment is over $20.6 million between the federal and provincial governments, and the City of North Bay. The plan is to replace eight conventional buses with hybrid buses in the North Bay Transit fleet and support new sidewalks and stormwater system upgrades. The city will also use these funds to upgrade a transit terminal and the fare collection system.

Jim Redpath, founder of the JS Redpath mining company dies at age 88

Jim Redpath, founder of Redpath Mining, has died at the age of 88. Originally from Quebec, Redpath moved to North Bay in 1962 and established J.S. Redpath Limited. Under his leadership, the company expanded globally, becoming one of the most respected mine contracting firms in the world.

Known for his integrity, vision, and innovative approach, Redpath left a lasting legacy in the mining industry. He was also dedicated to giving back to the community and mentoring others. His contributions helped shape North Bay's economy and reputation as a mining services hub.

Mystery solved: Identity of military nurse in northern Ont. portrait found

For years, a portrait of a young woman in a Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service uniform puzzled historians and local experts in and around North Bay, Ont. The mystery has finally been resolved – the painting depicts Christena Clinton Gordon, a nurse from Callander, Ont., who served in Western Europe during the First World War, tending to wounded soldiers.

The painting once hung in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23 on First Avenue West in North Bay before being placed in storage. It was rediscovered in poor condition during a storage room cleanup in the early 2000s.
