Late last Thursday afternoon, Elections Canada released riding-by-riding results for last weekend’s four days of advance polling.
Nipissing-Timiskaming saw 21,200 people cast their ballots during the early polls that were open on the holiday weekend.
Richard Theoret, regional media advisor with Elections Canada in Sudbury, the closest contact for the riding of Nipissing-Timiskaming, said advance ballot totals cannot be truly compared to the last election, due to the realignment of this riding.
For example, Englehart is now a part of Nipissing-Timismaking for Monday’s federal election.
Overall, there are 87,961 eligible voters in the riding.
According to Elections Canada, a record 7.3 million Canadians voted in the advance polls this year.
Outgoing Member of Parliament Anthony Rota received a fond farewell from Mayor Peter Chirico at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
“Thank you to our MP Anthony Rota for his years of service, dedication and diligence in serving the constituents of Nipissing-Timiskaming over those years,” he says.
Rota, who began his political career on city council from 1994 to 1997, was first elected to Parliament in 2004.
In 2011, he lost his seat to Conservative Jay Aspin by 18 votes.
Four years later, Rota defeated Aspin by over 11,000 votes and has been the riding’s MP ever since, winning re-election again in 2019 and 2021.
“Thank you so much for your service to this community and all of our northern communities, it’s been appreciated,” says Chirico. “Enjoy your retirement, have some fun and bon chance.”
