Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran Bill Parfitt, 99, was presented a Quilt of Valour on Saturday evening as part of the 22 Wing Band concert celebrating the RCAF’s 100th birthday in 2024. Bill was a Second World War tail gunner who flew 22 ‘hot’ missions plus two more after the war. A special tribute video, produced by Clark Communications, was played for the packed crowd in the Capitol Centre. See his interview on the Echo Essentials podcast.

North Bay City Councilor Gary Gardiner returns to the Echo Essentials studio to talk about why council decided to kick $200,000 of casino profits into the Elmwood community centre project as well as discussing further the $63-million twin pad facility (which got a green light to proceed last week).
Gary gives out three stars for the arena project decision, one to a primary proponent this term, one to a councilor for deciding in the end to support it and one to someone who didn’t but offered constructive criticism that was useful to consider.
He also explains his personal business development involving two triplex condo units at McIntyre St. West and Timmins Street – right beside Sweetman’s Garden, the centre of recent controversy after city workers oversaw the clear-cutting of trees and shrubs on the adjacent former rail way corridor.
Co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale, in the pre-interview banter, debate the benefits of the casino in the community and talk about the Sweetman’s Garden issue … as well as cures for the hiccups … like the addictions treatment centre project being yanked from Canadore College.

Friday’s Echo Sportscast #11 cuts the ribbon on the NDA’s winter high school sports schedule as boys basketball and girls volleyball teams take to the courts across Nipissing District this week … although the start was delayed by the ‘snow storm’ Tuesday, pushing the first games to Wednesday. See the Scollard and Chippewa gyms tonight for junior and senior action.
We also caught some all star boys volleyball action on Monday and we had good intentions to drop by the girls basketball as well, but it wasn’t in the cards on Wednesday. We did, however, get to the first games of the 49th annual NDA hockey tournament this morning (see below for some of tonight’s sched). It wraps up Friday afternoon at Memorial Gardens with semis at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. with the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
Our Sportscast Spotlight features Greg Richardson, a retired teacher who is continuing as coach of the Chippewa Ravens, the defending Nugget Shield league champions.
And we have a special promo spotlight with Malory Dominico, one of the top offensive producers with the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team who has a dollars-for-points fundraising again this year … Nipissing is ranked third in the nation with a 10-1 record and hosts Queen’s on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Candy sparks
sweet debate
amongst movie buffs
Cheap Seats is back with the Anna Kendrick directorial debut: “Woman of the Hour” but in terms of passion… our boys have vehement debates on candy this week!
Nick brought trailers, Drew brought feet, and Ben tries to keep everything on the rails! Who are the newlyweds? When will Marvel stop? What is The Shadow? These answers and more are on this week’s Cheap Seats.
Today’s Zen Suggestion:
Stop watching your kids as they practice with sports teams or rehearsing for a theatre production. They need space to grow and you need a life beyond them.

To North Bay With Love:
Sweetman’s Garden has been a hot topic lately, and not just on the Echo network, but throughout the North Bay community. For the past two weeks, we’ve tried to get as many voices heard as possible.
Liza Vandermeer and Carol Hansman join host Lisa Boivin in the studio to talk about the garden’s impact on the community and why it is so important to so many people. You may remember them from another podcast in July after the city co-hosted an open house about PFAS ‘forever chemicals.’

Echo Essentials:
Liz Lott and Liza Vandermeer, along with dozens of other Friends of Sweetman’s Gardens and thousands of visitors, didn’t need another battle on their plate – especially one requiring them to reprove the value of a seven-decade community jewel in North Bay.
They joined co-host Dave Dale and guest co-host Stu Campaigne, in the Echo Essentials podcast studio to discuss the impact of a recent mis-planned city works initiative that clear-cut a canopy of trees at the end of McIntyre St. West and along the former rail bed up to Timmins Street. Vandermeer noted the last public fight to save Sweetman’s Garden from development was about 15 years ago. Just this year, she said Tourism North Bay promoted the garden as one of the Top 10 jewels to visit.

Backroads Bill:
In Wednesday morning’s episode of the Backroads Bill podcast, three environmental catastrophes that impacted Ontario’s landscape and people are featured. The lack of consultation with both Indigenous peoples and environmentalists allowed these projects to go through.
The lessons learned helped shape new policies to make sure there is accountability and to prioritize the people impacted by these changes.

Last Friday’s Echo Sportscast #10 kicked off the new NDA hockey season with a video contribution from an up-and-coming cinematographer (@connerhughesmedia) who captured the spirit of an overtime win for the Ravens over the Bears in the 2024 opener. In addition, we have some clips from the Bears win over the Barons on Wednesday night at the Sam Jacks Recreation Complex in West Ferris and a promo of the NDA hockey tournament next Thursday and Friday.
In post-secondary action, we have interviews with five local products on the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team, including both goalies, following a much-needed two-win weekend at the Gardens. We even have video of the overtime heroics in a 4-3 victory Saturday night.
And our Echo Spotlight interview is with Darren Turcotte, coach of the Lakers women’s hockey team ranked third in the nation with a 9-1 record – our way of promoting their Saturday night contest at Memorial Gardens against the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Knights. Puck drops at 8 p.m.
